Pies coach’s final plea to out of contract De Goey

Collingwood coach Craig McRae has reiterated his desire for the out-of-contract Jordan De Goey to stay at the club next year.

In his press conference following the Pies one-point preliminary final loss to the Swans at the SCG on Saturday, McRae said he had spoken to De Goey’s manager about keeping him at the club, but admitted he didn’t know how far the club’s formal discussions with the midfielder had gone.

With their season now over, Pies honchos will turn their focus and discussions towards the 2023 roster.

“I grabbed his manager and said, ‘Mate, let’s get to work on this’,” McRae said.

“I’ve openly said this: I want Jordy at our footy club next year.

“Now, I don’t know how that’s progressing. Hopefully it’s progressing in the right direction – not because he’s Jordy De Goey, but I just think this environment is the best place for Jordy De Goey.

“That’s obviously going to take its own course in the next few weeks now.”

News Corp is reporting the $3.2 million deal that was withdrawn after De Goey’s infamous Bali trip during the mid-season bye, has been put back on the table.

St Kilda have also expressed an interest.

De Goey had a relatively quiet night at the SCG, recording 12 disposals and 10 contested possessions. He also made eight tackles and six clearances.
