Bathurst 1000 grid starting to take shape


PremiAir Racing has confirmed Dunlop Super2 Series front-runner Cameron Hill will make his Repco Bathurst 1000 debut with Chris Pither.

Hill will share the No.22 Holden ZB Commodore with Pither backed by Coca-Cola in this year’s race, which takes place at Mount Panorama across October 6-9.

It will mark the 25-year-old’s first start in the Repco Supercars Championship in what is Australian motorsport’s most iconic race.

Hill, who sits second in the Super2 Series standings behind teammate Declan Fraser, expressed his excitement at the announcement.

“This will be my first main game race, and what better way to make my debut,” he said.

“While it may be my first time at Bathurst in a Supercar, I’ve got plenty of laps under my belt, having recently won the Bathurst 6 Hour after starting 60th due to a technical infringement. 

“I’ve also raced in the Bathurst 12 Hour, in Carrera Cup, and the Toyota 86 Racing Series.”

“For me, this is going to be an incredible experience, and I’m looking forward to being on the mountain. Hopefully, between Chris and we can achieve a great result.”

Pither, who hails from New Zealand, got his first start in Supercars some 15 years ago as a co-driver.

The Kiwi, now in his third full-time Supercars season, recognised the significance of Hill’s debut.

“It’s very hard to get your first opportunity in the Repco Supercars Championship,” said Pither.

“Cam’s been going well in Super2 this year, so he deserves the opportunity. 

“Racing in the Bathurst 1000 for the first time is a special experience, I look forward to sharing it with him. I know he’ll do a great job.”

Only five seats remain unaccounted for on this year’s Bathurst 1000 grid.

Recently, James Golding joined PremiAir Racing after Garry Jacobson was sensationally axed mid-season.

Golding had been primed to join Team 18 alongside Scott Pye. That has left the Mount Waverly-based team on the hunt for a new co-driver to race the No.20 entry.

Matt Stone Racing has yet to confirm who will join Todd Hazelwood in the No.35 car, but will have Aaron Seton – son of touring car legend Glenn Seton – in the No.34 alongside Jack Le Brocq.

Brad Jones Racing still hasn’t announced who will join Jack Smith, although it’s expected David Wall will return after they first drove together in 2021.

Earlier this year, Michael Anderson announced he would field an ex-Dick Johnson Racing Ford Mustang under the Anderson Motorsport banner.

However, that ratification of that entry is reliant on a high-profile co-driver signing, which as yet has not been cemented.

The Repco Supercars Championship is currently led by Shane van Gisbergen of Triple Eight Race Engineering.

The calendar continues with the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint on August 19-21.
